The City of Somerton operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The City Manager is the Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Somerton is charged with the responsibility for the day to day operation of all the City Government functions through policy direction set by the Mayor and City Council.

City Manager Ian McGaughey has 15 years of local government experience over a 25-year career that includes leadership in government administration, business development, and community relations. Before joining the City of Somerton in April of 2018, Ian was the town manager in Clifton, Arizona for three years. Prior to that, he worked as a department director for a local government in Alaska. He has also held public office, being elected to two four-year terms as a council member for a municipality in upstate New York, where he is originally from.
