We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the City of Somerton and inform you of the requirements of business ownership inside the City limits. The following information is generalized and is intended to give you some basic information. There may, however, be more specific information for your particular type of business. Please feel free to contact our Clerk Department/Business License Office for additional information by calling (928) 722-7330.
The City of Somerton Business License Office is located within Somerton City Hall, second floor. The office is available for business from 7:00 am to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. We are closed on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays.
You may request a business license application in person, by mail, or by download. There are four (4) types of applications that can be downloaded:
Is your Business Located Within the City Limits of Somerton?
You will need to return the completed application packet to the business license desk. The application will be reviewed by city staff to determine if the application can be approved or disapproved based upon its location and your type of business. Their job is to make sure that your business will comply with City zoning regulations both in commercial areas and residential neighborhoods. Please refer to the application packet for more detailed information about the approval process.
Business located outside of the City limits does not require going through approvals. Food-related businesses are required to see the Yuma County Health Department and provide a copy of their health license.
Do You Have A Home Business?
It should be noted that many people are unaware that even small, home-based businesses located inside the City or those that come into the City to conduct business are required to be licensed before conducting business. Temporary (or itinerant) businesses, adult-oriented, special events, carnivals, door-to-door sales, and non-profit organizations have regulations that pertain to them specifically. The Business License Office has information regarding those types of activities.
The license fee dependent upon the type or classification of your business. Our most common license fee is $80.00 per calendar year and all license fees are non-refundable. Your business classification may or may not fall under the range listed here. The complete license fee schedule is available by viewing the Fee schedule.

The Regular Liquor License application process begins with the Arizona Department of Liquor License & Control (DLLC). https://azliquor.gov/forms.cfm
Applications are sent to the local governing body for additional review and consideration by the City Council.
After your application has been accepted by the DLLC they will send a copy of your application to the City of Somerton. The City Council has 60 days to make a recommendation of approval, disapproval, or no recommendation.
The City Clerk’s Office will send the applicant a letter requesting a City non-refundable application processing fee which currently is $324 (amount adjusted every July per the CPI) and advising of the scheduled date for Council’s public hearing. The City requests to have the applicant or a representative attend the public hearing should Council have any questions.
Following receipt of the application processing fee, staff will post a liquor license application notice and a copy of the application at the business site to be left in place for 20 days prior to Council’s public hearing date.
Staff will advise following the Council’s public hearing when the notice can be removed.
Following the Council’s recommendation decision, the City Clerk will send the recommendation to the DLLC and they will make a final approval or denial regarding the application. Applicants will be contacted directly by the DLLC regarding issuance.
